Advanced Speech Therapy

Welcome to “Advanced Speech Therapy,” an intensive course designed for experienced speech-language pathologists, clinical specialists, graduate students at the doctoral level, and professionals seeking to deepen their expertise beyond foundational practice. Building upon the comprehensive knowledge established in foundational courses—speech therapy basics, articulation therapy, language development, and clinical activities—this advanced course tackles the complex, nuanced, and challenging dimensions of speech-language pathology that define expert clinical practice. Across ten detailed chapters, we will explore topics rarely covered in depth in introductory training: differential diagnosis of complex speech sound disorders, acquired neurological communication disorders (aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria), cognitive-communication disorders following traumatic brain injury, right hemisphere disorder, dementia and communication, traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders, complex augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) assessment and implementation, counseling skills for clients and families, and ethical decision-making in complex clinical scenarios. We will also examine the neurophysiological foundations of communication disorders, evidence-based practice at the cutting edge, and the role of the SLP in interdisciplinary teams for medically complex clients. This course demands critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and a willingness to engage with ambiguity and complexity.
